Meeting 2:

We kept the same medium, pencil on paper, but this time focusing on still life drawings. Helen and I brought in a few small figurines and items that would make this possible, this included a porcelain geisha figure, painted cat, Volkswagen model car, and a snail shaped tape dispenser. We went over the basic information about the different grades of pencil to three new members, and instantly got started.

We encouraged using pictures that members had on their phones as another source of still life figures, which somehow led to a strangely chaotic discussion about Pokemon. Along with this, were many small series of Pokemon drawings. Additionally, because of the figurines, we came up with the idea of introducing some aspects of surrealism, like the geisha-headed cat, or the snail with human eyes. Afterwards there was a free draw session where some people drew what they wanted to like portraits or unfinished sketches.

Olivia: Today was a quieter session than last time. Fewer people showed up, for a total of 8, but we did get three new members. Because it was a smaller group we were able to work more closely together, at a single table in the library, and help those who asked for more detail with how to use the medium, specifically with shading techniques.

Helen: I think because the group of people who attended this second meeting were different from the first, it showed to us that leading a club won’t always be the way we’ll expect it to be. But, it also taught us to take every opportunity we could get, so Olivia and I were able to give more tips and advice to individuals for our session that day.
