Meeting 1:

Helen and I started out the club by introducing ourselves and the materials that were already unpacked. We were using different pencil grades, specifically: 4H, 3H, 2H, H, F, HB, B, 2B, 3B, and 4B. From left to right the pencil grades became darker, this meant you could manipulate your drawings, by highly contrasting figures and shapes using the 4B, and simultaneously have a wide range of shading options, which meant more realistic drawings could be created.

The main purpose of this meeting was to get to know each other better, so the main activity was to create self-portraits or portraits of others who were present. We explained the importance of basic shapes to help guide you into making a realistic rendition of a person's face. We encountered a problem since many people move around while drawing, so pictures were permitted. Some people drew their friends from photos or life, others drew themselves, and all these pictures showed great artistic ability in everyone. Some members drew multiple portraits and you can tell because of the different styles, others focused on one portrait.

We also introduced single line drawings without looking at your paper, which is meant to help with understanding the surface and space you are working on. There are two examples of this type of drawing in the series of photos below.

A total of 12 people attended.

Olivia: On the first day we had a solid turnout, while we were expecting more of the younger grades to join, that didn’t happen, with only one tenth grader in attendance. This may have been due to our late start and mix up with the initial starting date of the club, meant to start February 14, but delayed because it was a rapid dismissal on the 14th due to Mid-Winter Recess. So our club was postponed to March 6th. But in the end we still had a good group of people that we were able to easily communicate with, and draw with.

Helen: For our first meeting I felt like we got a lot less people than we expected, and while it was a little unfortunate, I was glad that by the end of the day we had a comfortable group of people that had varying levels of art skills, drawing despite their differences. It made that Friday afternoon fun because we were able to laugh and appreciate each other’s art while taking steps to learn that material in a setting outside of school.
